The study focuses on type two diabetes management. It compares the study on the responsibilities of friends/family in type two diabetes management by Vaccaro, Exebio, Zarini, & Huffman (2014) and research on exercise and diet among adult victims of type two diabetes by Nelson, Reiber, Boyko, & NHANES III (2002). Type 2 diabetes is a condition that occurs as a result of the body not producing enough insulin or when the body is incapable of using insulin appropriately: a disorder termed as insulin resistance (American Diabetes Association, 2013). Initially, it was considered to be an adult ailment, however, presently it is a problem to young people too (Narayan, 2012). Research on type 2 diabetes proves that it is caused by both genetic and environmental factors. The risk factors that contribute to the disorder are high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity and high level of cholesterol (American Diabetes Association, 2013). Gestational diabetes is capable of developing to type 2 diabetes. The condition affects Americas' population regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, race or living class (Narayan, 2012). Thus, everybody is at risk of getting type 2 diabetes.
Significance of the Studies
The most significant aspect of the study is that it focuses on management of type 2 diabetes. One study brings out the roles of the family or friends in support of type 2 diabetes victims (Vaccaro et. al., 2014). While the other demonstrates the impact of exercises and diet on the management of the disorder. Though the two studies are centered on one topic, they are based on different grounds. Hence, bringing the results together can help in the management of the illness.
Participants Monitoring and Source of Funds
Nelson and his team used their savings to conduct the research. There was no compensation for participants in the study. Thus, participation was a free will (Nelson et. al., 2002). Subjects might have been encouraged by the necessity of the inquiry. Vaccaro and her group recruited participants through a community outreach method (Vaccaro et. al., 2014). The study had 110 blacks, 174 Cuban and 121 Haitian subjects with type 2 diabetes. All subjects accepted and signed the IRB information consent form. Each participant chose the language to use. Trained interviewers collected the data. The subjects fasted for eight hours under a qualified phlebotomist before giving venous blood samples. The National Institute of Health funded the study (Vaccaro et al., 2014). Similar to the other research it also had no compensation benefits to the participants. Hence, participation was on self-will and motivation to contribute due to the essence of the study.
