Role of Negotiation in Patient Education
Negotiation aims to discuss a matter to arrive at a common ground. While it may seem odd in the context of patient education, it plays a pivotal role in effectively educating a patient. Negotiation allows the patient, caregivers and the health care provider to effectively discuss the concerns surrounding the patient and come up with optimal and personalized care for the patient (Clay-Williams et al., 2018). The healthcare provider can effectively deal with possible barriers to the patient's wellbeing, such as cultural issues, through the negotiation process. Since the patient is involved in the discussion about their wellbeing, the negotiation model is culturally competent and is likely to maximize positive health outcomes.
