Discussion: Managerial Epidemiology vs. Clinical Epidemiology

According to the World Health Organization (2018), epidemiology is the examination of the distribution and determinants of health and disease conditions in defined populations. Managerial, descriptive, and analytic epidemiology are distinct branches of epidemiology. For this discussion, compare and contrast the similarities and dissimilarities among these branches. In addition, identify which of the branches applies more to the role of a healthcare manager/administrator. Provide rationale and support for your response.

Epidemiology is a branch of medicine which specializes in frequency, distribution and indicators of health-related situations or events in specific population. Epidemiologists use data collected as source of information to people in order to influence public health policies. The main object of this branch of science is to identify underlying health issue to improve overall health and safety of a given population (Rothman, K. J., et al 2008). Clinical epidemiology focuses on health issues relating to clinical medicine and its main objective is decision making to improve patient outcomes. Epidemiology has three distinct branches which include analytic, descriptive and managerial epidemiology. The three branches are related and also differ in some aspects (Saracci, R. 2010).
SIMILARITIES BETWEEN MANAGERIAL, DESCRIPTIVE AND ANALYTIC EPIDEMIOLOGY
The three branches of epidemiology help in analyzing trends and origin of diseases occurrences and any underlying health conditions for specific populations and community (Rothman, K. J., et al 2008).
The results from the three branches of epidemiology helps in achieving the main objective of epidemiology.
They help in understanding health care needs and how to mitigate the occurrence of diseases in the community therefore they all improve public health system (Rothman, K. J., et al 2008).
The three branches focus on multiple complex variables which are difficult to quantify e.g human
interactions, behaviors, pathogens and lifestyle (Amaducci, L., & Lippi, A. 1990).
DISSIMILARITIES
Descriptive epidemiology aims at analyzing, examining and organizing data to understand variations of the disease in the entire population or community. Analytic epidemiology aims at using available samples to draw an inference about what causes diseases in the entire population. Managerial epidemiology aims at using available epidemiological tools to manage and design
health care system (Amaducci, L., & Lippi, A. 1990).
Descriptive epidemiology describes how a disease or disease determinants occurred within a specific population. Analytical epidemiology describes or attempts to gain knowledge on t the amount of influence the determinants have on the disease that occurred. Managerial epidemiology de...
