I recently had the opportunity to interview William Brant one of the nurse supervisors at St. Mary Healthcare Center. Below is the summary of the interview.
What is your role as a health care team member?
William Brant explained that, as a nurse supervisor, his role involved overseeing and directing the daily activities at the care center like the admissions and discharge. He also manages health care staffs and considers himself as the link between the staffs, patients, and the management of the center. He ensures that all the daily care operations are conducted, and everything is in order including assigning tasks for nurses and directing care activities on a daily basis. William stated that he also provides support to nursing staffs where necessary. Occasionally, he also participates in community outreach programs to educate individuals on general wellness and self-care concepts.
How do you define professionalism and how does professional responsibility influence your work?
William defined professionalism as more than just acquiring the required knowledge; professionalism for him is about individual personality and how his actions impact on patient's health outcomes. According to William, professionalism involves respecting patients rights and also adhering to specific health care guidelines when administering care. Professionalism entails showing kindness to the people one serves.
In reference to the nurse code of ethics, professionalism is defined as a process of building trust and developing a lasting relationship between health care providers and patients, meaning that health care providers should adopt desirable characteristics within their profession (Bondi et al., 2016). Some of the important characters that define professionalism include commitment, integrity, accountability, and respect. In summary, professionalism means respecting and caring for patients with kindness to build confidence and develop trust among the people I lead.
