Section One: Christian Perspective on Spirituality and Ethics Versus Postmodern Relativism
The perspective of Christianity on ethics and spirituality is based on religion. Christianity contends that spirituality explains the nature of God as a supernatural being in terms of how, who, and what. God is believed to be all-knowing, all-powerful, and omnipresent. Christian beliefs on spirituality are centered on the Bible. The beliefs expound on the essence of human life, explaining the truth and giving meaning to life. Believing in this and gaining such awareness enhances human understanding and tolerance for all experiences in life. As human beings choose their earthy direction, the concept of spirituality makes sure that they stand in the guidance of God. Spirituality also increases human acceptance of life by believing that God is always in control of everything that happens to them. Christians view the concept of ethics to make decisions and choices based on biblical instructions and guidance. Spirituality, therefore, guides Christians to adhere to God’s expectations. The Christian perspective on ethics and spirituality influences health care by guiding decisions made by setting choice and option boundaries.
In contrast, postmodern relativism argues that there is no solid truth on matters relating to spirituality. It considers two possibilities where God may exist and a scenario where God does not exist. The postmodern relativism concept argues that different ethical arguments could either be invalid or valid (Zavada, 2019). A person’s view cannot be considered null and void because it sounds or appears to be contradicting. The postmodern relativism concept is beneficial in health care as it allows for multicultural and diverse healthcare services (Zavada, 2019). By acknowledging this awareness, health care workers agree that they do not possess the truth on matters related to ethics and spirituality. Additionally, such awareness ensures that cultures that appear vague and less understandable are considered.
Section Two: Scientism
Scientism believes that complex sciences are the sole sources of truth and rich knowledge. They are therefore considered to give scientific knowledge that is superior. Scientism identifies those complex sciences as disciplines that rely on experiments and natural laws, such as biology and physics (Briggs, 2019). They are fully reliable and objective as they rely on facts and data to be tested and replicated. The results of these subjects are therefore reliable. Conversely, soft or straightforward sciences are referred to as pseudosciences that involve guesswork. They are usually subject to change and cannot be replicated. Therefore, they are weak and inferior to complex/hard sciences, which typically present with valuable data and rely on objective arguments and experimentation (Briggs, 2019). The soft sciences are subjective and can easily be influenced by human nature.
