Do you know that over 1% of the global population suffers from bipolar disorder regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic origin, or nationality? Bipolar disorder refers to a chronic illness that is characterized by energy and mood state fluctuations. Based on a study by Grande et al. (2016), the disease is the primary cause of disability among the youth, which leads to functional and cognitive impairment and increases mortality, mainly death by suicide (Grande, Berk, Birmaher, & Vieta, 2016). “Bipolar Disorder” by Grande et al. (2016) focuses on bipolar disorder, diagnostic classification, prognosis, psychological, and pharmacological treatments.
Since mood fluctuations are inevitable in life, particularly during stressful events, it is significant for nurses to learn various ways of managing bipolar disorder. In a mental health survey conducted worldwide, bipolar disorder prevalence across ethnic groups and diverse cultures was found to be consistent. The lifetime prevalence for bipolar I disorder was 0.6%, bipolar disorder spectrum had 2.4%, and 1.4% for bipolar II disorder (Grande et al., 2016). By considering sex, bipolar II disorder is more common in women than in men, and bipolar I disorder affects both sexes equally. Bipolar disorder is usually characterized by episodes of hypomania, depression, and mania. For this reason, the nursing practice should incorporate strategies through which caregivers can identify individuals with bipolar disorder and how to help them overcome this chronic illness.
The primary strength of Grande et al.’s article is the classification of bipolar disorder. For example, one can understand that the disease is classified based on its longitudinal course and the presence or absence of subthreshold symptoms. The other strength is that the article discusses the four primary episodes of bipolar disorder, namely mania, hypomania, depression, and suicide. In that light, individuals learn that bipolar disorder patients are 20 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population (Grande et al., 2016).
