Every microbiologist must have an adequate understanding of how microorganisms such as bacterias, fungi, yeast, molds, viruses, and other types of parasites live, grow, and interact with the environment. The paper probes some bacterial metabolic activities and an in-depth understanding of fungi, yeast, and molds.
Bacterial metabolic activities
1. Phenol red changes to yellow in acidic media and fuchsia in basic media. It turns yellow where an organism can utilize the carbohydrate, resulting in creating an acid by-product (Microbugz, 2019). On the flip side, when an organism fails to use the carbohydrates but uses the peptone, ammonia is created as a by-product raising the PH of the media turning it into fuchsia.
2. A Durban tube is a tiny glass test tube used to observe gas production by microorganisms in microbiology (gov, n.d.). They are usually placed in an upside-down position in other larger test tubes. Production or failure of gas production helps in the identification of the organisms.
3. Iodine is used to detect starch hydrolysis since it turns starch into a blue color upon reaction. Amylose in starch forms a deep blue color when iodine is introduced. Iodine molecules glide inside the amylose coils to facilitate the response. Since the solubility of iodine in water is not perfect, potassium iodide is used to ensure iodine dissolve in water to form the iodine reagent (Ophardt, 2020). Potassium iodide forms a linear triiodide ion that easily slips into the starch coil forming a blue-black color.
4. SIM medium refers to a combination differential medium used to test three differential parameters. Indole is produced when tryptophan is converted to pyruvate and ammonia by an enzyme called tryptophanase (Microbugz, n.d.). The production of indole illustrates a tryptophane activity. The existence of casein peptone detects indole production.
