There is a number of issues faced in the field of nursing from all over the world. Nursing shortage and nursing turn-over are considered as the most common issues which have been prominently impacting the performance and efficiency of numerous healthcare institutes. Every healthcare organization requires highly educated, professional and trained nursing staff in order to provide effective services to vulnerable individuals. There are different causes of nurse turn-over and nursing shortage, few reasons could be an aging Registered Nurse (RN) population and a demographically large aging boomer population, increased workload, and less number of enrolments in nursing learning centers (Reed, et al., 2017). Moreover, it has been perceived that there is lack of good leadership and management skills by head nurses and managers and this could be because of limited upward mobility, lack of communication, unsatisfactory remuneration, and inflexibility are key reasons of the high rate of nursing turnover.

In this rapidly growing world and the changing healthcare environment, it is substantial to initiate a strong, effective and creative leaders and managers. Leaders play a vital role because they retain firm characteristics, for instance, commitment, integrity, motivation, courage, risk takers and can easily handle stress. Therefore, good nursing leaders in health care settings have the capability to encourage and inspire those around them in order to work as a motivated team to attain a mutual goal. Similarly, nursing managers are equally important and their role is not only to promote and deliver safe, healthy and quality nursing care but at the same time, their role is to facilitate and manage the environment of the healthcare setting.
However, it is considered to understand the different role a nurse leader and a nurse manager play to comprehend their approach to the staff they have responsibility for. Few prominent differences between a nurse manager and a nurse leader are the nurse manager is most commonly involved in numerous daily tasks and more focused on patient care, planning, improvement, quality, and budgeting. Whereas, nurse leader is less task-oriented as compare to the nurse managers. They are more focused on setting policies, directing transformation and be an inspiration to their teams. They have an important duty for the complete quality of patient care delivery, the satisfaction of both the staff and patient and structural outcomes.
The nursing leaders and nursing managers can effectively develop visionary key goals aimed at reducing the shortage of nurses and nurse turnover with the help of workers based interests and preferences. The main focus of the nursing leaders and managers is to work on decreasing the percentage of the nursing shortage and nurse turnover, they must effectually use conceptual, interpersonal and technical skills in regards to control nursing shortage and turnover.
