Analysis of the Interprofessionalism

Essay Instructions:

Nurses work in interprofessional teams to provide health care to patients and families. Differences in how health care professionals collaborate and communicate may lead to medical errors or sub-optimal patient care. Learning how to effectively collaborate and communicate in interprofessional teams is essential to provide optimal patient care.
Directions:
View the Johnson & Johnson podcast entitled, "What Ebola Taught Us About Collaboration and Communication." You may access the podcasts (Links to an external site.)here (Links to an external site.) or through Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. (Links to an external site.)
Reflect on your experiences working with members of the Interprofessional team as a Registered Nurse or as a Nursing Student. If you do not have experience working in a health care environment, you may discuss another example of working in a team environment.
Write a paper that is 2 - 3 pages in length (excluding the student title page and reference list).
The paper should address the following elements:
Write 1 - 2 paragraphs describing an example of a misunderstanding or negative experience you had communicating with another discipline/provider in your practice as a Registered Nurse or as a Nursing Student. (i.e. physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, etc.)
Write 1 - 2 paragraphs discussing how differences in the background (such as educational training, the perspective of the patient, experience, or other factors) between you and the other person played a role in the misunderstanding.
Write 1 - 2 paragraphs discussing what you could have done differently in the situation. How could the guiding principles identified by the podcast (flattening the hierarchy, valuing the importance of every team member, creating a no-blame environment within the team, creating a safe care environment, ownership of care environment, and communication within the team) be applied to this situation?
Write 1 - 2 paragraphs describing how you will apply what you've learned in this module to your current or future nursing practice.

Include an introductory paragraph.
Support your ideas with evidence from the module learning materials or other references.
Follow APA Style Requirements for Writing Style, Mechanics of Style, Headings (Level 1), Margins (1 inch), Font (11 or 12), Line Spacing (double spaced), In-text citations, Student Title Page, and a Reference List.

Interdisciplinary teamwork that integrates a mix of health care skills improves health care outcomes in an environment where the health care team members work together to meet a common health objective. Even though there are differences in interdisciplinary values and professional autonomy, they are more likely to collaborate in a work environment that promotes collaboration. Thus, promoting and integrating interdisciplinary communication allows the team embers to work more closely together (Walton et al., 2020). Recognizing communication barriers, knowledge gaps and discussing how to overcome them is necessary. For example, physician-nurse collaboration is beneficial, but without a good understanding of how to promote interventions such as patient education to improve diabetes, self-management affects the effectiveness of interventions.
An example where there was a misunderstanding was when there was an intervention to improve patient care in a diabetic patient and had indicated he was open to patient education. When I suggested we focus more on diabetes self-management, the other healthcare team members were unsure how to go about this. When I talked to the lead physician, I did not get immediate feedback, and he indicated he was busy. Yet, diabetes self-management and care effectively enhanced interventions and improved health outcomes (Cunningham et al., 2018). Poor team collaboration affected communication to achieve the overall goal to improve health outcomes and monitoring.
The power differential between nurses and physicians combined with nurses' experience working more closely with patients may be the reasons behind the misunderstanding. Physicians are trained for longer and have the authority to prescribe and intervene to improve health care. As such, there are cases when they believe they are well placed to diagnose and make major health decisions without requiring the nurse's input. However, as a nurse, I cared...
