California faces an increase of obesity cases, which pose a threat to the life expectancy, signifying higher health costs (Babey et al., 2009). The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is at the forefront in creating a strategic plan to respond to the obesity crisis. In order to participate in the program for the prevention of obesity, an approval from the organization’s management and the counties’ Department of Health offices are required. The team will write a letter to the management and Department of Health, seeking approval for the implementation plan.
The current levels of obesity affect all counties in the State of California. To begin the process, it is important that the project focuses on San Joaquin, which has more than 65% of its population affected by obesity (Zarate, 2014). Soda consumption in the County of San Joaquin among children aged between 12 to 17 years is high in comparison to other counties in California (Babey et al., 2011). Sugary beverages consumption is a risk factor for obesity. Once the project succeeds, then it would be easier to replicate to other counties in California. In the project, twenty staff members would be required to undertake the task. This includes recruiting a project manager among the staff, who would be responsible for ensuring the implementation plan completes in the intended period of two years.
The project will focus on promoting the individual nutrition and physical activities behavioral change. This would be through social marketing campaigns, programs after schools, integrating this into the school activities, demonstrating healthy foods, and promoting physical activity. The project in collaboration with the Central California Regional Prevention Program (CCROPP) will focus on policies present in the county and changes in the environment, needed to support healthy behaviors and providing safe areas to play and get healthy foods.
Description of Current Problem, Issue, or Deficit Requiring a Change
San Joaquin currently has a funded Public Health Services program that addresses obesity, the Network for a Health California Campaign that is particular to low-income residents, and the Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program. The Network Campaign focuses on promoting healthy diets in individuals and changing behavior of physical activities through campaigns in social media, afterschool programs, integration into school curriculum, and food demonstrations for healthy eating. San Joaquin has more than half of its residents that are obese.
The CCROPP project focuses on the changes in policy and environmental essential to permit and support healthy actions, such as safe areas to play and purchase nutritional foods.
