Students living with disability due to multiple underlying conditions and injuries might feel sidelined by the one-size-fits-all yoga practices as they might be unable to adapt to them. Research indicates that one in every two Americans aged 18 and above and 75% of those over 65 are affected by musculoskeletal illnesses (Yelin et al., 2016). Based on this evidence, it is necessary to adapt my yoga class to ensure it meets the needs of all students. This includes aligning the yoga class – keeping learners safe and empowering them to exploit their potential and limits. It is necessary to recognize the needs of each learner, including the fact that some transitions and poses can worsen multiple conditions. In this vein, I would offer variations in the less approachable poses for students with some common conditions to make them feel included. I would skip poses and transitions that might not work for some learners to ensure the class benefits everyone, including those without underlying illnesses and conditions (Burke, 2022).
