ACOs coordinate activities between healthcare providers and hospitals to provide high-quality services, and need support from payers to succeed (Crosson, 2011). Kaiser Permanente mainly operates in California and despite effort to expand to more areas, the ACO is mainly found in the core geographic markets. Kaiser Permanente is also faced with the problem of retaining members since association with Kaiser Permanente is voluntary. Members who are likely to get higher payments for there serve are more likely to leave. Flexible systems that allow information continuity and care coordination are better placed to improve healthcare provision.
To respond to the challenges faced by Kaiser Permanente there is a need to generate more savings since this would result in more members joining. Other than this has been the insistence on improving efficiency based on innovations. This includes integrating services by linking expert physicians and pharmacists who are more likely to follow the clinical guidelines.
