Describe the factors that determine the infectiousness of tuberculosis (TB) patient.
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacteria. The lungs of a person with tuberculosis get damaged quickly, followed by the damage to other parts of the body (Fogel, 2015). A number of factors determine the infectiousness of a tuberculosis patient, some of which are as follows:
1 Presence of a cough
2 Acid-fast bacilli on sputum smear
3 A cavity in the lungs
4 The patient may cough up blood in a small amount, and in some cases, the infection erodes into a Rasmussen’s aneurysm or the pulmonary artery, leading to massive bleeding
5 If the patient undergoes a cough-inducing procedure
6 If the patient is not receiving adequate treatment or has a prolonged illness
Explain the main goals of a TB infection control program.
One of the basic goals of a TB infection control program is to prevent the illness. Another goal is to help patients recover from the disease at a fast speed while ensuring the protection and safety of the staff (Dye, 2015). It is a common observation that the disease spreads instantly, and a major goal is to reduce the transmission of infection by providing quick treatment to the patients. There is a strong need to make people understand that prevention is more important than having the disease and rushing to the hospital for immediate diagnosis or treatment. The risks of tuberculosis can be decreased if more and more people are taught how to avoid the infection.
Discuss the three levels of an effective TB infection control program.
The TB infection control program is based on a three-level hierarchy of control measures. The first level is an administrative level, which is intended to reduce the exposure of people to infections. For this purpose, specific jobs are assigned to healthcare experts within a hospital or another healthcare setting. In the meantime, TB risk assessments of the setting are conducted once a while (Bilogortseva, 2018). The second level of an effective TB infection control program is the respiratory control, which involves the use of top-notch medica...
