Community health nursing is a medical discipline that incorporates the use of evidence-based research to improve health care. The practice considers cultural competence among the students and the need to educate them on different communities' socioeconomic backgrounds to eliminate healthcare disparities (Jones, 2020). An organization refers to people living in a particular location and share specific values. Community health nurses function to protect, promote, and preserve those for a specific community. Their key roles include promoting a healthy lifestyle, preventing diseases and health conditions, providing direct care, initiating health and wellness programs, and engaging the community in research that improves healthcare.
Also, the community health nurses provide education to the community members on maintaining a healthy lifestyle to reduce the occurrence of diseases and deaths. They organize educational forums, assemblies, conduct health screening, administer immunizations, hand-out flyers, and sensitize the community on pandemics and stay safe. They also distribute health-related items like pregnancy kits, condoms, and fliers on teen pregnancy, contraceptives, smoking, and obesity (Purnell et al., 2016). The community nurses work in hospitals, clinics, community health centers, schools, and government agencies. An individual should complete their undergraduate nursing program before obtaining their licensure. After obtaining the required licenses, the individuals can then proceed to put their knowledge into practice.
Community nurses can act as change agents in eliminating healthcare disparities such as discrimination based on ethnicity, social class, disability status, origin, gender, and sexual orientation. The discrepancies have led to high mortality rates due to neglect and discrimination among medical providers (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Nurses can work with stakeholders, institutions, and agencies to identify strategies, create action plans, and implement health equity approaches and advocate for patient needs.
