In any piece of writing, citation style is determined by area of study. APA is used for social sciences and education. MLA for English and humanities subjects while CMS in history mostly. Citation is used to acknowledge the work of others, and sharing sources with other students. Any borrowed idea including paraphrases, direct quotes and illustrations must be cited, using any of the citation styles. However, APA is the commonly used style in most writing.
APA citations can appear throughout the paper; in-text or at the end of the paper, commonly referred as references.
