Question One
Short wave energy refers to radiation with a visible wavelength within a near ultraviolet and infrared spectra. As infrared has no standard cutoff, short wave is, therefore, defined in different forms. Long wave energy refers to the outgoing radiation from the earth to space as infrared at low energy. The waves are in the form of thermal radiation. The sun is scorching and has a lot of energy to give off. This energy enters the atmosphere in the form of short wave energy in the form of ultraviolet rays and visible light. The earth releases less heat making it cooler than the sun, therefore, it emits long wave energy in the form of infrared rays as it has less energy ton give off.
Question Two
A station model is a chart that represents meteorological data for weather forecasts making it easier for reporters to read. From the model, we can tell that the temperatures are expected to be at 79F. This is an indication that it will be mainly cold for the most part of the day. The level of pressure is projected to be at 999.8 m.b and a dew point of 65F. The wind is blowing northeast at about 20 knots. There is expected to be less than 12% of cloud cover meaning there will be few clouds in the area.
Question Three
Various factors affect climate in deserts, the principle elements are latitudes. Latitude is the angular inclination of a place from the equator to the sun. The further off a location is from the equator, the less sunshine it receives. Las Vegas lies at 36.16990 N, 115.13980W. With this place, it receives intense heat from the sun that contributes to its desert conditions. The distribution of water bodies on the surface of the earth is another factor that affects the climate of a region. As the water cools slower than land, the surrounding areas are moister than those further from the sun. As Las Vegas is in the basin of the Mojave Desert, it receives very rare humidity, hence its dryness. Mountains and other physical features affect climate in that they divert the direction of wind and moisture, therefore, changing the climate of the areas around it. Las Vegas is located in a valley surrounded by mountains, and this explains why it receives lesser precipitation compared to the rest of Nevada. It is on the leeward side of these mountain ranges and this best describes the desert vegetation and rocky landscape of the city.
Question Four
