Skilled nurses promote the success of a healthcare system, and the nurse educators are professionals that equip skilled nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills needed in nursing. According to Oermann et al. (2017), nurse educators are registered nurses who use their academic expertise and clinical experience to teach nurse students and nurse staff. They establish curriculum and standards, prepare students for learning, empower new nurses, and improve the system that controls nurse education.
The Role of a Nurse Educator in a Curriculum Development according to the National League for Nursing Nurse Educator Competencies
The responsibility of Nurse Educators in curriculum development according to the National League for Nursing Nurse Educator competencies is to formulate and design curriculum that mirror trends in healthcare and train graduates to work properly in the healthcare environment (Young & Shellenbarger, 2012). For effective participation in the curriculum design and assessment, the nurse educators do the following.
First, they ensure that the curriculum is based on the mission and philosophy of the organization, and societal needs, as well as nursing and healthcare trends to prepare students for practice in a dynamic care environment (Young & Shellenbarger, 2012). Second, the nurse educators revise the curriculum according to the assessment program outcomes, healthcare trends, and needs of the learners. Third, they establish partnerships that support the goals of education.
Next, nurse educators implement curriculum revisions using recommended strategies and theories. They also ensure that the curriculum design and implementation decisions are based on principles, research and theories of nursing education (Young & Shellenbarger, 2012). Besides, Nurse Educators demonstrate curriculum development knowledge in the following areas: - designing competency statements, choosing suitable learning activities, identifying program outcomes, and developing learning objectives (Young & Shellenbarger, 2012). In addition, they collaborate with external constituencies throughout curriculum revision process. Lastly, nurse educators design and implement models of program evaluation that promote quality improvements of all program aspects.
How the Role of a Nurse Educator Changes in Different Settings
Nurse educators can teach in technical schools, universities, and hospital-based nursing programs (Oermann et al., 2017). They can also work as consultants, administrators, or independent contractors in various education-focused occupations. Their role changes in different settings depending on their level of clinical experience and academic expertise. For instance, in classroom, nurse educators facilitate learning.
