Peer feedback plays an instrumental role in higher education. When used constructively, peer feedback improves the learning outcomes of students (Huisman et al., 2018; Yu, 2020). In peer feedback, students give and receive feedback from their peers. Below is a set of guidelines for giving and receiving feedback from my peers in this program.
Giving Feedback
While providing feedback, it is important to be kind and sensitive to the person receiving the feedback. The goal of feedback is not to make the person feel bad about their work but to help them improve their work. I know that I would not want someone to just criticize my work; I want them to offer helpful insights so I can improve. In giving feedback, students should:
1 Be specific
When offering feedback, it is easy to provide a general comment without explaining it. However, this is unhelpful. As Yu (2020) indicates, in peer feedback, students have to first identify a problem so they can offer feedback. Being specific about the problem allows the receiver to make improvements by addressing the specific problem. Also, if a peer likes the work, they need to specifically say what they liked about the work.
2 Be detailed
Once you identify a problem, you need to diagnose it before you can provide feedback (Huisman et al., 2018). It is important to provide details about your opinions on the problem to give the receiver a chance to go through your thought process concerning the problem. I would want to know how a peer arrived at their conclusion because it would give me a deeper insight into the problem.
3 Understand the goals of the receiver
