Jean Piaget is one of the most famous theorists, known for his study on cognitive development stages. Serving in the directorship of the International Bureau of Education, Piaget formally asserted that only education has the potential to save our societies from possible fall down whether brutal or gentle (Munari, 2000). Piaget’s theory of child development is studied in pre-service courses for graduates in education. Educators continue to integrate constructivist-based strategies. This essay explores how Jean Piaget’s theories have made it easier for me to learn and teach mathematics.
Based on my experience, I will share a different opinion with what Piaget is saying within the schema theory. A theory put forth by psychologist Piaget who believed that knowledge is organized by schemas also known as cognitive structures. This theory describes how students learn through interacting with their environment by adding new information to previous knowledge (assimilation) and learning an entirely new topic (accommodation) (Van de Waller, Karp & Bay-Williams, 2019). I always was the type of learner that excelled when there was a demonstration of the concept beforehand or if the lesson was all done through examples or observations.
I struggled to understand concepts through following the lecture method and always needed some kind of application to better understand mathematical principles. In mathematics especially, I would have to come up with my examples and demonstrations to better understand the concepts.
