Essay Instructions:

Proficiency in academic language in all content areas is key to student learning and achievement. Successful teachers must provide many opportunities for students to read, write, listen, and speak using content language. Verbal and nonverbal communication techniques are an integral part of fostering elementary students’ active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction.
Review the disciplinary core ideas from Next Generation Science Standards (physical sciences, life science, earth and space sciences, engineering, technology, and applications of science), using the “Three Dimensional Learning” topic study material. (right below)

5E Instructional Model Template
Part 1: Matrix
Select a grade level, Next Generation Science Standard, and develop two learning objectives related to the selected standard. Next, detail each component of the 5E Lesson (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) and how it could be applied to the selected grade-level standard by selecting one appropriate instructional activity for each and providing a rationale why the activity would be effective for implementing the 5E instructional model components with all students. You will also describe assessment ideas that could be used to support the instructional strategies. Note that you will adapt the information from this template to complete the Topic 6 “Science Lesson Plan” assignment.
Grade Level:

5E Lesson Component Description

Instructional Activity and Rationale
(In 2-3 sentences describe an instructional activity that would be appropriate for the standard and provide a rationale for why it would be effective in helping to implement the 5E instructional model with all students.)

Engage: This phase of the 5E model aims to pique the student's interest and assess prior understanding. In addition, the teacher tries to help students make associations between what they know and the lesson content.

Activity: The teacher begins by asking questions that expose prior knowledge and helps them make connections between past and present learning experiences. An example is by asking, “What did we learn about sunrise and sunset in the previous lesson?”
Rationale: Raising questions about previous concepts related to the lesson content draws students’ interest and curiosity. It also helps the teacher assess learners’ current understanding of the lesson topic.

Explore: This phase of the 5E model aims to help students investigate lesson concepts in a hands-on manner (Lesley University, 2019). The teacher helps the learners acquire a common set of experiences that can help them understand new concepts.

Activity: The teacher shows the students a video explaining the patterns of the sun and their relation to the regularity of the seasons. The teacher asks probing questions to help learners make sense of their common experience and clarifies any misunderstandings. Example of probing questions include: “Is there a pattern to the length of day and night during certain months?” or “Do you think there is a relationship between day length and certain seasons?”
Rationale: The video helps students have common, concrete experiences which can be employed in other phases when formally discussing lesson concepts. The probing questions encourage learners to investigate situations, experiences, and observations.

Explain: This phase of the 5E model aims to provide students with the opportunity to express what they have grasped. The...
