Summary:
The early years of a child's life set the stage for healthy development and positive long-term outcomes. Therefore it is important for development practitioners to accurately assess critical factors affecting a child's development such as executive function, social emotional learning, and language and literacy, particularly for the 250 million children worldwide who do not get a healthy start because of poor nutrition, a lack of early stimulation, and risk factors associated with poverty. This symposium brings together some of the leading thinkers and researchers in the field of early childhood development assessment. The diverse panel of experts in child development, nutrition, language and literacy, developmental psychology, education and assessment explore new and innovative developmental assessment tools and approaches for children aged 0-8. Panelists address the state of the field of early childhood assessment with a focus on the role of culture in influencing child development and the way it is measured.

Clinical Field Experience C: Targeted Teaching Activities
Developmental practitioners need to assess children's development because, in addition to understanding the child's strengths, it also allows them to identify any areas that need attention. For example, children are exposed to numerous risks in many developing countries due to unhygienic living conditions and poor nutrition. This puts them at a greater risk of developmental delay. In assessing a child's development, it is important not to over-interpret one development area as evidence of a lack of progress in another area. For example, a child's poor vocabulary development is not necessarily caused by hearing impairment. Effective communication could be misinterpreted as a risk of language delay. However, there are specific areas of development where delays are worth further exploring. As such, various assessment tools can monitor a child's development over time. If the child's assessment is not accurately done, the developmental practitioner might miss important details which could have facilitated development.
The panel discussed the importance of considering a child's cultural aspect in implementing the new developmental assessment tools. They focus on how culture is measured when assessing a child's development. A child's culture might affect their development because the child might have been raised differently. Such upbringing might render the current assessment tools ineffective because their development did not consider the element of cultural diversity (Innovations in Early Childhood Development Assessment., 2018). This is why they would have to update the tools to account for this. One panelist proposed that there shoul...
