Adopting culturally responsive learning environments assists teachers in classroom management practices. However, limited research and integration of cultural complexities in education concerning student behavior challenge the learning process (Donahue-Keegan et al., 2019). Culturally responsive teaching practices assist teachers in creating an engaging learning environment, assessing student progress, and mitigating challenging behaviors in class, thus essential in a learning environment.
A culturally responsive learning environment primarily leads to increased student competence, engagement, motivation, and safety. Inclusive school curriculums are adopted in a diverse population to cater to students’ individual needs. In addition, student academic improvement and excellence directly correlate with an individualistic learning environment. Culturally responsive teaching involves educators being sensitive to the cultural identities of their students for improved learning outcomes. Specifically, a culturally responsive learning environment incorporates teaching strategies that use cultural aspects such as linguistic aesthetics to improve student understanding. Tanase’s (2020) research indicates that students are observed to have improved reading comprehension and mathematical thinking. Teachers can also adopt universal screening to evaluate all students to track students learning progress. Notably, universal screening incorporates elements of frequency, measure, and criteria to provide an overview academic performance of a student. Teachers administer, grade, and compare testing assessments with previously recorded academic results and goals of individual students to assess academic improvement.
Furthermore, a positive learning environment that encourages the inclusion of all cultures makes students engaged and motivated to be attentive during learning. In particular, culturally responsive teaching strengthens teacher-student relationships. Patnaik et al. (2020) encourage teacher autonomy in leveraging students’ individual needs to model a positive and safe learning environment. In a diverse world, an inclusive school curriculum applies abstract elements that improve cultural competence and is helpful in social and cognitive development (Donahue-Keegan et al., 2019). Subsequently, a culturally responsive learning environment aids in resolving racial discrepancies prevalent in society. Globalization poses the importance of culturally competent teachers addressing students’ needs. An inclusive learning environment facilitates socialization and a sense of safety and belonging for all marginalized communities, mitigating cultural and racial alienation. Overall, culturally responsive learning strategies improve student engagement, motivation, competence, and safety, hence better academic achievements.
