Building an Ethical Online Culture
Leaders in a virtual working environment can create an ethical online culture by combining multiple practices. First, the management should act as a role model to their employees since employees look up to them to determine acceptable behaviors in the workplace. Employees will practice an ethical online culture when their senior management practices ethical behaviors in the virtual working environment. Second, communication on ethical expectations plays a significant role in promoting ethical online culture. The management can eliminate moral uncertainties in the virtual working environment by creating and disseminating an organizational code of ethics. The code of ethics should stipulate the main values and ethical guidelines that employees should comply with while in the organization’s virtual working surroundings. The top management should portray ethical behaviors for the code of ethics to be effective. Third, organizations can set up online seminars and training programs to offer ethical training to their employees (Milman, 2020). The training sessions should be applied to stress the organization’s code of conduct to illustrate that the activities are not permitted in the virtual working environment. Lastly, the management can publicly reward ethical behaviors and punish unethical acts to promote an online ethical culture. Performance appraisals should directly evaluate how the workers’ decisions measure against the organization’s code of ethics. On the other hand, appraisals must include the steps taken to achieve the goals.
