Cognitive and social development influences learning, children and teens included. Adolescents are within this group as they mature and begin discerning information to make critical judgments. Cognitive development, which is the encoding of information given to acquire new skills differ from one individual to another. According to Brown (2009), the social environment makes this slow or fast. People who can quickly have properly developed cognitive skills in socially friendly environments have a high chance of learning fast. Individuality and search for identity affect how people behave. Teens and adolescents engrave themselves searching for social belonging, gender, relationships, self-image, and economic status. These concepts preoccupy the minds and draw away their attention from routine academic work. The behaviour of a student in controlling these makes it easy or difficult in taming these preferences and giving priority to learning.
Adolescents and teens battle strong desires to achieve a few things and explore more in their spheres. The first is the social needs like being in relationships and desire to explore sexualities. They are also under the influence of their peers to have at least a better image of themselves as others had (Brown, 2009). All these present themselves as challenges to teens in their studies and education. Accounting for them in schools require institutions to come up with programs to assist them in time management, overcome the pressure, and handle some of these challenges in the best ways they can. Among the considerations, there is proper education on sexuality, balancing on peer pressure, keeping oneself comfortable with what they can afford and keeping control of the changes they go through in their adolescent stages. The instructions should guide adolescents to adopt and prioritize their academic studies more than what they do for their lives. They need to understand that they have a longer life to work for, and not their present stages.
In 2018, Singmaster elaborated how various perspectives lead to the diverse inclusion of concepts to help students manage their studies.
