Organizations are made up of people tasked with the accomplishment of certain activities and processes. In the process of carrying out the daily activities, people from diverse backgrounds interact with each other, bringing in the social aspect to the organization. Given the fact that people have the autonomy to choose how to behave, those who are regarded as the most important resource in an organization tend to behave differently. The behavior of individuals that work in an organization directly impacts the overall conduct of an organization and hence the emergence of organizational behavior as a discipline. Organizational behavior can be understood as a discipline tasked with understanding the human aspect of an organization in relation to goals and objectives, performance, job attitude, and job satisfaction (Urinov, 2020). The term organizational behavior can be associated with various disciplines including economics, sociology, psychology, management, and many more, making it a multidisciplinary concept.
Different theories have been put forward to express the concept of organizational behavior: scientific management theory, McGregor theory of X and Y, and the human resources approach theory (Urinov, 2020). Although the different approaches to the concept of organizational behavior yield different outputs, the human resources approach has had a lasting impact on the management of the human resource element of an organization. The approach recognizes the human aspect of the organization as the most important resource, and instead of applying the traditional management approaches that seem controlling, the human resource approach aims at offering support to allow people to realize their competitiveness, creativity, job satisfaction, and consequently an overall growth of the organization (Urinov, 2020). The idea of people in management shifting their focus from controlling the subordinates to supportive roles is the reason this approach is otherwise referred to as the supportive approach.
