Families, Children, and Socioeconomic Status
As we study socioeconomic factors associated with families, another aspect of class in our society relates in subtler ways to how people from certain status groups are seen. Issues such as resolving marital issues or having and raising children vary based on socioeconomic status. Think about television shows (not movies) and how those with fewer resources who are of a lower socioeconomic are represented and portrayed in comparison to those who have many resources and are of higher socioeconomic status are represented. How is each group represented? Are there similarities or differences?
For this discussion, select a TV series that was televised in the last three years and featured a supposedly normal American family living in contemporary times. (Don’t include throwback shows or movies. Don't include any fantasy shows such as Wanda Vision.)
Look at how the class position or status of the family in the show was represented (portrayed, imaged, or described). In times past, we have had sitcoms featuring blue-collar families, like Roseanne, Good Times, One Day at a Time, and Ugly Betty, to name just a few. Do we see signs of income and socioeconomic diversity today?
In your discussion, please address the following questions.
• Be sure to name the TV show.
• Write a brief summary that explains the setting and demographics of the family (the jobs of the wage earners are a good indicator - look up average wages for their jobs and cite your sources).
• How is the family portrayed? (Consider the living situation, friends, activities, social conformance, honesty and trustworthiness indicators, etc.)
• Whatever the class, are family members shown interacting with people from different socioeconomic groups?
• Does the family own a home? Rent? How are the interior design of the home and the cleanliness/tidiness? Are the standards real and affordable to most or unreal for the jobs and income of the adults in the family? How about their clothing, cars, accessories, entertainment?
• What messages related to social class and economic position do you think one might take away from this show?
• 250 words. Use examples from the required reading and/or other academically credible references to support your claims. Make sure to correctly cite and reference using APA 7th edition formatting.
