The minimum wage refers to the lowest legal compensation that companies are supposed to pay their workers. Since 2009, the minimum wage in the United States of America (USA) has been $7.25 per hour. Specifically, it is determined by evaluating the living standards of people depending on various economic factors, such as inflation. Numerous states in the USA have established their minimum wages to improve the living standards of their residents. The issue of minimum wage increase is crucial since it determines the compensation of employees in the USA, which affects individuals’ livelihoods.
The minimum wage increase is a significant issue that should be addressed since it affects the lives of all Americans. The federal minimum wage has stagnated at $7.25 per hour for over a decade (Desilver). During this period, numerous things have changed that affect people’s living standards. In that light, the minimum wage should be raised when one of the determinants of individuals’ livelihoods changes. For example, if the cost of petroleum products increases, the minimum wage should also be increased. The government should ensure that individuals can afford life necessities without straining. For instance, employees should be able to buy foodstuffs, clothes, pay their bills, afford healthcare services, and educate their children. However, workers cannot manage to meet all these requirements if the minimum wage is not raised.
Policies have been enacted and implemented to address the issue of the minimum wage increase. President Franklin Roosevelt was the first to pass the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) in 1938. He intended to safeguard employees during the Great Depression, which is something I like.
