Contact your local Child Life, Hospice, or Compassionate Friends (agency supporting families after the loss of a child – the link will take you to their “find a local chapter” page) to find a local grief support group. Share with them that you’re a studying Death Dying & Grief in Pediatric Care and ask if they allow students to attend a single session as an observer. We suggest you contact early, as it may take some time to find an appropriate group and time to participate.
Attend a support session. Ask in advance if they prefer you to observe or participate.
Write a reflection paper (2-3 pages) about the experience, including about any issues, needs, conflicts, theories that you have experienced through attending the session, as well as learned in the readings or class discussions to date. Start the paper with a brief introduction about the support group (child life, hospice, compassionate friends, etc).
If you haven't yet completed your observations for the Support Group assignment, as observations likely aren't an option this week UNLESS you've found an online group to observe, I’d absolutely allow you to complete an interview (by phone or email is fine) with someone who leads a support group….your interview should include (but not be limited to) these questions…..how do they structure their support group, the training they went through to prepare for this role, and any advise they’d give someone starting in the field….

The MISS Foundation is an international volunteer-based organization providing care for grieving families. It is a beacon of compassion and hope for grieving families. This foundation was established in 1996 by Dr. Joannne Cacciatore, a professor at Arizona State University who specializes in traumatic death, especially a child's death. The core functions of this foundation are to provide counseling, advocacy, research, and education.
The foundation, being an international one, operates mainly through its website. It is here where one identifies their location and is attached to a support provider personally or as a group. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, all in-person support groups have since been temporarily postponed. However, from the information gathered through email, the foundation offers online services as a continuing activity and when the need arises.
It is clear that the foundation greatly depends on volunteer-based organizations to make their work possible. Their volunteers range from a member of bereaved families with the first-hand experience of the pain of losing a child to counselors and psychologists in training. With volunteers from various fields, the foundation is keen to train, empower and care for them to ensure that care is not compromised.
Counseling is the core function of the foundation. Dr. Joanne has unique training programs that certify medical and mental health professionals to their healthcare way throughout the world. They offer different programs while partnering with certified providers like Compassionate Bereavement Care Provider.
