Social Media: What Harms the Young Minds?

Essay Instructions:

For this assignment, you will write a Cause and Effect essay using three points of analysis. You will be most successful writing on a topic of interest to you or for which you have a passion.
A well-organized essay has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case would stating the selected topic in which causes and effects will be addressed.
A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. An essay with three points may be divided into three body paragraphs, one for each point describing the term. Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.
The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world.

Contemporary society has changed enough to affect the minds and actions of the younger generations in just one click. Social media pertains to platforms to socialize and communicate with other users, including Facebook and Instagram. Nowadays, social media is easily accessible among young people due to innovative technologies. It can be used via mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and even gaming consoles. Therefore, there is no reason for the youth to stop using such platforms when the technology openly offers convenience. Now, the question lies in the need to reduce use time. The younger population must reduce their exposure to social media for a limited period due to its negative impact on their mental health, behavior, and self-confidence. The content of this paper is based on personal observations and the analysis of each personal experience.
Based on observation, adolescents’ use of social media platforms has potential risks to mental health due to the increased frequency and intensity of social interactions. This results in increased involvement in subject matters, leading to a profound discourse. Moreover, the youth are exposed to unnecessary drama, which may develop negative emotions, affecting their way of thinking. For instance, one of the situations that I have observed on Facebook is that some individuals tend to post a quote or a statement about a particular person, and those who read it might think that the post is about them, even when it is not. If that person has an anxiety or depression, whether diagnosed or underdiagnosed, then reading such statements may increase emotional and cognitive trauma on their part. Additionally, such platforms may not filter content related to self-harm, suicide, violence, and other mental health problems, facilitating the development of the symptoms related to the said concepts. Sometimes, social media platforms cannot promptly take down posts, especially videos, related to aggression and oppression. Some videos circulated about suicidal attempts and murder on a live video. Whether the situation has happened or is just a prank, it may affect the mentality of the younger population, most especially those who have anxiety and depression.
