Role of Marine Staff Non-Commissioned Officer
Marine Corps is the most elite fighting force in the world. The saying “first to fight,” represents Marines actions as the people in the frontline, whether in humanitarian missions or on the battlefield. Over the years, Marine Corps has established its name in the world as the greatest of all. Marines are feared by the enemy and respected by the allies. However, the success of Marines is not dependent on the Marines alone; it also depends on the people who lead them. Marine leaders are exceptional. Marines are led by well trained, highly intelligent officers who are a product of Marine Staff Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs). Marine SNCO train, mentor, and lead by example while providing advice to junior officers based on their invaluable experience in the Marine Corps.
Marine SNCOs play a major role in training young officers. Experience is the greatest teacher and Marine SNCOs have a lot of experience. By the time a person becomes a Marine SNCO, they have invested a lot of time in the Marine Corps. Marine SNCOs train young officers in the field to ensure they possess the right skills for the job. They offer basic training to prepare young Marines for combat in the field. They also offer physical training to improve physical fitness among Marines. As Campbell (2021) reveals, the Marine Corps needs to have well-trained Marines who can survive and excel in the constantly evolving operating environment. They need to be trained to be lethal and ready for whatever lies in the future. SNCOs fill this need by providing hands-on training to younger Marines who also happen to be the future of the Marine Corps. SNCOs, such as gunnery sergeants, train younger Marines on how to use weapons and also some of the best combat tactics. According to Campbell (2021), gunnery sergeants are now being assigned the responsibility of running an Infantry Weapons Officer’s Course. Marine SNCOs develop younger Marines by instructing/ training them on weapons and tactics to ensure that they are better prepared than the enemy.
Since Marines SNCOs are experienced and have been with the Marine Corps for a substantial amount of time, they offer mentorship to young Marines. The purpose of mentorship is for someone with vast knowledge and experience to provide guidance and direction to someone with little to no experience so that they can also become better. Through mentorship, SNCOs can help younger Mar...
