Prewriting Name: Institution: Date: Prewriting Prewriting refers to all the processes that a writer performs to aid him or her in writing before the actual writing. This is the author’s initial point of discovering and exploring your initial ideas on your topic of interest. Prewriting is vital in that it helps us get our ideas into paper and brainstorm our thoughts. As the purpose of writing may be to inform, to explain, to narrate, to describe, to entertain and or to move, it is important to know why you are writing and to whom as well as the kind of writing you are doing (Brannan, 2010). The following are various techniques used in prewriting and each writer may use a different track from the other, it is, therefore, advisable to choose the one that suits you best. The first step is free-writing. It refers to a rapid drafting of your ideas into a paper some of which is vital in your work (Brannan, 2010). This triggers more words that relate to your topic of interest. Once this is done, the next step is focused free-writing that helps to focus on a particular ideas or thoughts. The second step is clustering. In this step the writer wants to find the right words for the topic, therefore, the writer need to get the words that relate well and express the ideas clearly. It is good to write a single word at the centre of a page and around it, connect it with other words that can relate with this particular word (Brannan, 2010). Later the writer needs to construct sentences using these words. Brainstorming is the other step of prewriting and it involves listing of words and phrases and any idea that comes into one’s mind when thinking about the general topic.
