Most people are not what they could be. They are less. We have great potentials. But most of this is dormant; most of this is undeveloped. Promoting development in critical thinking is similar to improvement in sports (for example in basketball) or in playing the guitar or saxophone. Thinking is unlikely to take place when a conscious commitment to learn is absent. So long as people take their thinking for granted, they do not commit themselves in the work needed for improvement (Cohen, 2007). Improvement in thinking needs a gradual process demanding commitment in learning and hard work. It is not possible for a person to become an efficient strategic thinker just because he has the will. To be an excellent strategic thinker requires changing habits of thought and this is a long-range task, occurring over weeks, months or years. The fundamental traits of a strategic thinker need an extended or extensive period of development.
As far as concern, I am aware that there are stages needed for development as a strategic thinker (Cohen, 2007). Stage one is the unreflective thinker (at this stage, I might not aware of crucial problems in my thinking). Stage two is the challenged thinker (I become conscious of problems in my thinking). Stage three is the beginning thinker (I try to improve, although without regular practice). Stage four is the practicing thinker (I recognize the significance of regular practice). Stage five is the advanced thinker (I advance thinking in accordance to regular practice). Finally, stage six is the master thinker (I develop insightful and skilled thinking to become the second nature of myself). Through these stages, I continue to accept that there are serious problems in my thinking (I am accepting the challenge to my thinking) and continue developing regular practice in thinking.
I continue developing more efficient critical thinking skills. In this way, I continue advancing this by making use of any opportunity to understand myself, how I think about complex problems, and how to make decisions. Understanding myself is critical because this information develops the foundation for advancing critical thinking abilities essential in the strategic environment (Roe, 2014). The more I understand myself, the more control I have over the process as well as the products I produce. In the future, I will be expected to work in strategic environments. This implies that there will be several opportunities for me to serve as a strategic advisor or thinker. I must thus continue to advance a wider and new set of thinking skills. This course has been vital assisting me develop efficient thinking skills to address the fast changing, complex and unstructured problems I soon encounter.
I learn by experiences which allow me to absorb (feel, see, hear), do (activity) and interact (socialize). I also learn by reflecting and thinking on such experiences. Roe (2014) opines that thinking is an activity of an extended period connecting recent experiences to the earlier experiences to develop a more interrelated and complex mental schema. The thinking entails looking for interrelations, differences, and commonalities deeper than their ...
