Management Principles
Introduction
Every organization, small or big, global or local, public or private, has a general objective of achieving efficiency and maximizing its profits and the various specific goals. The art and act of striving to attain basic and specific objectives through the creative and authoritative use of other people's efforts can be termed as management (Eichhorn & Towers, 2018). To attain the very basic objectives, organizations must have at least someone at the helm, a manager, representing an authoritative figure in charge of the basic functions such as planning, organizing, controlling, and even leading. These basic functions form the management principles that managers deploy to attain the objectives of an organization (Eichhorn & Towers, 2018). Without these guiding principles, organizations of any magnitude are destined to fail. Henri Fayol further broke down the main principles of management into fourteen distinct principles (Bacud, 2020), all of which can transform, empower, and make leaders better decision-makers. The management teams' efficiency will be further trickled down to the rest of the team, given that the leader would have set a good example.
Case Study Summary
The article, Management principles and the Washington, DC public schools (a): Choosing a chancellor, outlines an interesting turn of events in an attempt to secure a manager to the ailing Washington DC Public Schools (DCPS) [Hafrey & Reavis, 2011]. Victor Reinoso, an experienced entrepreneur, consultant, and project manager in the private and public sectors, observed public schools' dire situation and thought something had to change. He fought his way to the board just like any other politician, although his approach leaned on a different strategy from the rest of the candidates. He eventually found his way to the board. However, his ambitions to push for a change in the public school sector were dwindled to a mere dream by the stubborn and conservative school board, which adopted what he termed as "decision by the committee culture" (Hafrey & Reavis, 2011 pp.4). Luckily, while on the verge of submitting to the school board culture, Andrian Fenty emerged victorious as a mayor for Washington DC and had no other person in mind than Reinoso for Deputy Mayor for Education, a docket created after the mayoral takeover of the public education system. In this position, Reinoso would have the opportunity to be in charge of reform the DCPS, and an outline of the major steps undertaken by Reinoso before kickoff on Fenty's tenure demonstrates what a strategic leader and change agent he surely is.
Reinoso's Management Principles
From the case study, it is possible to deduce some of Reinoso's attributes that satisfy Fayols management principles. The basic attribute possessed by Reinoso is the ability to plan and organize teams. As soon as the mayor-elect appointed him, Reinoso embarked on a rigorous plan of transforming the DCPS by first ensuring there are legislations to bring them fully under the mayor's leadership (Hafrey & Reavis, 2011). He also planned to have a team with a structure that resembles that of private consultants, where a team member is rec...
