Girl,” by Jamaica Kinkaid, is Jamaica Kincaid's short story that relates a series of commands, obligatory tasks, and fears, directed at the title girl by presumably some older female relative. There is a consistent use of the second person point of view, where she addresses her audience as "you.” Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl," is unusual for its form a monologue conversation. A primary theme of Espaillat's poem "Bilingual” is straddling two cultures creates conflicts. “Girl” is a short story written as one long sentence, a series of rules given from an authority figure most likely a mother to a girl at a transitional age. The poem is prose because of the word choice and its structure (Gale, n.d.). The rhythm of the poem makes it sound like a song or a chant because it comes with constant repetition. The author also uses simple imperative verbs and words like “always, to be sure.”
