Sociology in the media studies how mass media communication affects people’s views of each other and their daily interactions. In addition, sociology in mass media is concerned with the accessibility and transmission of information. Media professionals play a key role within a media organization to ensure they are successful. However, these media professionals are bound by ethics, professionalism, and economic and political constraints when deciding. Thus, this paper seeks to analyze the position of a journalist within a commercial news organization using the concept of professionalism, objectivity, and ethics in media professionals with a close analysis of photographer Kevin Carter and his famous work “The Vulture and the Little Girl.”
Professionalism
Journalists are media professionals whose role is to investigate and write informational news stories and articles about real-life events using unbiased and fair perspectives. Their duties include gathering first-hand information, interviewing experts, and organizing the outline interestingly and cohesively. In addition, they present all the useful facts without being affected by their beliefs, morals, or values. Further, regardless of their feelings, they must understand their audience and serve relevant communication to their community. In addition, journalists are a tool of society and, thus, must serve the community rather than the government. Journalists exist in different forms, such as photojournalists, political journalists, business journalists, sports journalists, opinion journalists, and many more.
Kevin Carter: The Vulture and the Little Girl
Kevin Carter was a professional journalist famous for his work ‘The Vulture and the little girl’ published by New York Times in 1993. The photograph captured by Carter represents a girl in a hunger-stricken frail who has collapsed in the foreground with a vulture staring at her. It is reported that the girl was running to the United Nations Camp for food relief, where she collapsed. The photograph was taken in Sudan in 1993 ( New York Times,1993). The photo won a Pulitzer Prize award for the ethical issue and social impact. However, the image received critics that Kevin would have saved the girl from the vulture instead of taking the image. Kevin took his life four months later, which is believed to be a result of the vulture and the village girl encounter and its aftermath.
