First of all, emotion is mostly applicable to a wide range of phenomena like temperament, sentiments, moods, and passion. Emotions are formed with intentions because they show a connection between the person feeling them and a certain event, thing or environment. The development of emotions would depend on its functional perspective and viewpoint. This paper will focus emotions as discrete states.
Emotions are seen as patterns of configuration in the brain that is supported by neurochemical processes that lead to subjectively experienced feeling states that are accompanied by changes in functions in the body and behavior (Moissinac, 2016). Examples of discrete emotions are guilt, pride, and anger. The 1st parts of the emotion process is the interval that happens between the stimulus’ perception and how the bodily response is triggered. This includes shift in heart rate, facial expression, and skin conductance. This is enough to start the analysis of emotions, but it shows a number of aspects like a person’s subjective awareness of their emotion and behavior that is part of emotional response. These discrete emotions is applied to communication in a non-verbal aspect. It is the most important contribution of basic science to emotional expression and it was Charles Darwin who first suggested that they are universal and his ideas on emotions and their expressions were innate and evolutionarily adaptive and their similarities could be seen as phylogenetically (Matsumoto and Hwang, 2011). Although, this was inconclusive and that facial expressions were specific to culture, having their own set of expressions.
