MUSI303 Concert Review (World Music Ensemble)
I attended the World Music Ensemble music concert at the University of Calgary. It is critical that Dr. Rod T. Squance directed the ensemble, which was executed in the Eckhardt-Gramette Gallery, Rosza Centre on November 25, 2013. The concert aimed at enlightening its audience on the beauty of music from diverse cultures. Further, the concert also intended to collect funds for charity using music from different cultural backgrounds. It follows that music from countries such as Bali, Brazil, Benin, Iran, Cuba, the Middle East, Ireland, Pakistan, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, and Pakistan featured in the Ensemble. It is crucial to highlight that the second half of the concert ended with pop songs while the first half of the concert began with instrumentals. Thus, it is important to acknowledge that most performers used instruments like the saxophone, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, violin, flute, guitar, the piano, and the bass guitar. On the contrary, few non-western performers used non-instruments such as the tar, oud, erhu, tanpura, dizi, and tuzheng. Consequently, the non-western instruments produced unique and authentic sounds that could not be produced by western instruments. Ten songs were performed using the non-western instruments implying the overall performance from the presenting musicians was excellent. It is vital to highlight that most of the musicians were neither full time musicians nor people with music majors. Instead, they were learners with basic a background in music.
The concert kicked off with a performance called Rindik, which was performed by Dr. Squance and ten students. The Rindik performance portrayed all the elements of a Bali Indonesian song that often accompanied by one instrument. Regardless, the rendition by Dr. Squance, had a variety of instruments. For example, the rendition had instruments such as the Tabla and the orff keyboards. Moreover, the Rindik had multiple identical instruments playing simultaneously, which made the sound lively and exciting. Crucial about the Rindik is the fact that the sound from the orff keyboards sounded like rain drops. Simply put, the entire song mimicked the progression of a heavy downpour. It is critical that even though the sound produced from the instruments was pleasing to the ear, the performance had a shortcoming because the entire song was repetitive.
Ronda Lun and Mehdi Pouragha made the next presentation, which was a duet for the piano and the oud. A Ph.D. student called Mehdi Pouragha performed the Oud, a chordophone instrument from the Middle East while his undergraduate partner (Ronda Lun) played the piano. It is notable that the melody and beat structure of the presentation made the song sound as though tango roots inspired it. Additionally, the song had an upbeat, an attitude and was repetitive. The repetition was present despite the fact that the piano player tried some fast licks into the song. Put simply, the song was repetitive because the entire song had little variation.
