Plagiarism is a result of the failure to cite quotations and thoughts taken from research sources and/or failing to put those quotations and ideas in quotation marks in an essay thus it can also be defined as the failure to use ones own words when writing summaries and paraphrases. Definitions of plagiarism however, can differ from institution to institution and one should be alert that definitions of plagiarism are open to construal based upon the academic situation.
