Huawei Product History Student’s Name Institution Huawei Product History Introduction Huawei is one of the biggest technology firms in the world, competing with other giants such as Apple and Samsung Corporation. The Chinese-based company, which operates in 170 nations globally, posted revenues of more than $107 billion in 2018 (Johnson & Groll, 2019). The company sells a wide range of products and solutions including cloud services, switches, and smartphones. This essay examines the history of Huawei by focusing its beginnings, the release of a new switch and domestic expansion, international expansion, 5G development, and dual-brand strategy. Beginnings Ren Zhenghei founded Huawei in 1988 after working for Shenzhen Electronics Corp for four years (Gilley, 2000). Ren was in the army before leaving and joining the state-owned corporation. After the four years in the corporation, Ren managed to get a loan of $8.5 million to start Huawei with 14 other colleagues (Gilley, 2000). During its beginnings, the company was a reseller of imported telecommunication equipment. The company also had a team of researchers who, according to Gilley (2000), reverse-engineered imported network equipment and switch devises to produce its own brands of products. Release of New Switch and Domestic Expansion The company released its switch in 1993 and was able to gain an important client- the army (Johnson & Groll, 2019). The contract with the army was integral in its success during the early years. Not only did not it attain protection from the state, but it also marked the start of expansion in the domestic market. With the government’s policy locking out foreign competitors, Huawei had an opportunity to grow domestically. As informed by Johnson and Groll (2019), the company embarked on expansion in the local market through ruthless campaigns such as selling its technology products and services at very low prices to eliminate competition.
