Most importantly, enrolling in the course was essential as it was a critical approach to introduce me to various critical concepts and ideas related to information systems and information technologies that, in turn, assist business ventures in succeeding and sustaining their competitive advantages within their respective industries. Before enrolling in the business-related course, I had a distinct perception of information systems and information technology and whatever the two different terms meant. Specifically, I always believed that the two different broad terms referred to the same meaning. However, it is clear that “information systems” has a different meaning than “information technology.” The original perception of “information systems” and “information technology” changed significantly, and I currently have a different understanding of the two concepts. Many people consider Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS) identical. However, the reality is that IT is a subcategory of IS. The notion that we can interchange the two can stimulate confusion for persons with technology-based career interests. Despite dealing with computers or relevant technological tools, these concepts have varying features and specified career opportunities that necessitate distinct education, training, and development (Iyamu & Kekwaletswe, 2010).
First and foremost, IS is an umbrella entity encompassing individuals, processes, and systems meant to develop, manipulate, disseminate, redistribute or store data. The IS field links computer elements to the business. Among the rationales human beings might fail to differentiate IT and IS is that they might accept that every information system is computer-based. However, an IS might be straightforward as paper and pencil. The objects are just separate items, but when used jointly, they develop a system that records information.
