Training and development, both aim at improving the performance of the organization. Training is a coordination of a program in an organization with the aim of improving knowledge and skills of employees according to their duties. Conversely, development is the coordinated activity or an act of assessment that enables the work force of an organization to learn and grow (Bergen, 2013). However, training and development have some differences in nature and function. First, training aims at teaching new employees on the requisite skills for their job while development involves training of the existing employees for their improvement. Secondly, training is short-term of up to six months while development is long-term and continuous. Finally, training aims at improving necessary knowledge and skills for the current job while development aims at equipping employees with competencies for overcoming future challenges.
As an illustration of the specific examples of how training and development can be used to create more productive and engaged employees in the workplace, it all depends on the managerial behavior of administrators in the subject organization. First, in training, employees should be taught and understand the correct procedures of using relevant tools and other facilities to perform their duties. On the other hand, in development, employees should be coached to work towards the goals and vision of the organization. Secondly, high-potential employees should be given special attention during training to improve production.
