Assignment Instructions

For the Session Long Project you will be applying the concepts in the background materials to your own personal experiences in the workplace.  For this first SLP, choose a supervisor that you personally worked for and got to know well, and apply the background materials to analyze their leadership qualities.  Carefully reflect on your supervisor’s traits, behaviors, and leadership styles.  Then write a 2- page paper addressing the following issues:

  1. Overall, would you consider your supervisor to be a leader based on definitions of leadership you found in the background texts?  Or was he or she simply a supervisor/manager and not a leader?
  2. How would you describe your supervisor’s personality and leadership traits? 
  3. Would you describe your supervisor’s behavior as being task-oriented, or people-centered/relationship-oriented? 
  4. How would you describe your supervisor’s leadership style?  Consider the leadership styles discussed in the background text materials: autocratic, participative/democratic, and laissez-faire/free-rein.

The organization wanted a supervisor who would serve as a leader. It was for this reason that the organization carefully selected an employee to act as a supervisor of the company. The employee was best in work performance, can solve challenges and show others how work should be done. The management trusted him. The person possesses qualities of a leader. He oversees and coordinates work, records and monitors outcomes, enforces decisions and directives and also develops and empowers employees (Humphrey and Strokes, 2000). He is responsible and determined, and able to take responsibility seriously. He is self-confidence; he believes in his ability to ensure that things are done and instills confidence in workers. He is a mentor and a role model thus giving employees maximum support. He is empathic and always sensitive to situations and feelings that employees experience at workplace and in their lives. He has a lot of humor and likes making fun at work.

The supervisor has the following personality traits, which have made him a competent supervisor: he is responsible, emotionally stable, cooperating, extrovert, and creative. He as also leadership traits such as he can withstand work-related pressures and stress. He takes initiative, and he is supportive, innovative, and ambitious. As part of personality traits, the supervisor is also equipped with managerial and technical skills important in handling his roles to assist reinforce the expected cultural norms and meet major strategic objects. Payne (2005) explains that these skills have enabled the supervisor involved in shaping the direction that the company desires to move and working to develop processes and employees that are required to facilitate achieving expected goals. Supervisory role involves working with people. It is vital to ensure that supervisors not only conduct regular performance review of employees’ jobs, but also committed to the development of employees’ welfares and opportunities.
