Martinet (2010) defines strategic planning as a systematic process through which the expected future of an organization is predicted and later incorporated into the organizational goals and objectives. Conversely, Wolf & Floyd (2017) assert that in strategic planning, the desired future state is first projected before working backwards toward the current state. The first situation in which I had to strategically plan in my workplace is when each member of the sales and marketing team was required to prepare a personal 3 year sales and marketing plan, indicating sales projections and possible changes in the industry and the individual response strategy. I used foresight to predict how the company’s sales and marketing division was going to change in future and how these changes would impact on individual performance. Prediction of the desired future state of the sales and marketing department was made before working backwards to the current state.
The second situation is when I was incorporated in a team that was to draft a five year growth and development plan for my department. According to Papke-Shields & Boyer-Wright (2017), strategic planning is a sequential, time-bound process in which organisations formulate the future organizational vision and sets goals and objectives to be attained within a three to five year timeframe.
