Social Media Presence in Health Care
This week’s discussion focused on patient privacy and maintaining the confidentiality of the patient medical record. Legal and ethical issues related to HIPAA will become increasingly important as the role of social media in the practice of medicine continues to evolve and (potentially) expand. Because of this increasing prevalence of social media in healthcare, the group project for this course will center on social media utilization by the medical practice.
You are working at JOHN SMITH Medical Practice, PC, a medium sized multi-specialty practice comprised of three primary care physicians (family and internal medicine), one OB-GYN physician, two pediatricians and two nurse practitioners. The owner physicians have decided that they want to begin utilizing LINKEDIN social media to market their practice. You have been asked to serve as part of a team to develop and submit a proposal to the physician owners regarding the benefits and drawbacks/risks (focus on legal/ethical related) for utilizing social media in the practice.
Issues for consideration to get you started include (but are not limited to) such items as:
The platform used is Linkedin.
Should the individual physicians have a personal social media account in addition to the practice’s social media account? Should the physicians be allowed/encouraged to interact with patients who may want to “friend” them?
Should the practice and/or individual physicians be allowed/encouraged to tweet about healthcare topics?
What are the drawbacks for each social media presence you recommend?
What are the drawbacks, if any, for deciding that the practice should remain WITHOUT any social media presence?
The format of your proposal should be a single Word document (APA format) to be submitted/uploaded to Canvas. The proposal should have an introductory paragraph and conclusion, and should have a structure similar to the following:
