Many global businesses depend on the sea routes to ship goods to and out of the business premises. The US is among the most prominent shipping countries globally, with numerous goods and services moving in and out. This shows that the seaports, and the entire transport sector, is crucial in business and marketing. This piece connects the course content with the article Senate needs careful approach on US shipping reform written by John Butler and published in the Journal of Commerce on January 20, 2022. The article gives a solid background to port delays and the history of shopping reforms in the US.
I retrieved this article from the Journal of Commerce. John Butler, the president and the CEO of The World Shipping Council and published on January 20, 2022. Butler gives his opinion on the need for the senate to carefully approach the US shipping reform. The international supplying chain serving the US is overloaded, a problem that Butler attributes to a historic and sustained rise in the amount of goods the US consumers and business people buy from overseas. The persisting issue in the transport sector is the many checkpoints in the delivery chain. These points are stationed in the sea terminals, in the rail and trucks taking goods to and from the port terminus, inland ports, warehouses, and the final delivery stations (Butler, 2022).
Congress is not serious about passing a law that will help address the problem. In the article Butler (2022) says that The "Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021" (HR 4996) that Congress passed does not help solve congestion of goods following the revelation by the National Industrial Transportation League who proposed the bill that it was not meant to solve the "port bottlenecks." Prior similar legislations have helped make operations easier at the ports. The Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998 introduced a free-market model but retained the Federal Maritime Commission to help regulate the activities.
