Read the Focus on Ethics: Ethics of Motivation and Strategies in Chapter 9 of Industrial/Organizational Psychology.
Answer the following questions:
Although there were some legal ramifications for what Hooters did, were the actions toward the waitresses also unethical?
Were the waitresses lied to? If so, is lying to employees unethical?
What about the motivating strategy of allowing employees to rip the shirts of other employees off? Is humiliating employees ethical?
How is it ethical to promise money or other compensation to students for studying hard? What if the losing students actually studied harder than the winner, but the winner only did well because he/she happened to be brighter? How would giving that student the money be fair to the students who studied harder?
The motivation techniques had the desired results by increasing sales or decreasing the use of paper, but how does that outweigh any negative consequences of such motivators?

Motivation Ethics and Strategies Student's Name Institution Motivation Ethics and Strategies Motivating employees is essential in improving performance at work with a focus on the attainment of organizational objectives. However, in recent times, some of the employers have mismanaged this concept to exploit their workers. Most of the organizations seem to be more focused on making profits and often get engaged in unethical motivational practices. There have been several incidences when managers subject employees to dishonest and manipulative processes. Motivation is not only limited to employees but extends to academic institutions where students get rewarded for exemplary performance in both class and extra curriculum activities. As much as it is a crucial aspect within institutions, motivation needs to be applied in an ethical manner. Hooters treated its waitresses unethically. The workers were influenced to work hard with a promise to be rewarded with a new Toyota automobile only for the competition’s champion to be duped (Aamodt, 2015, p. 354). If the management had informed the employees that the ultimate prize was a Yoda doll, the beer sales would not have been that high. Lying to workers is unethical and should not be encouraged. The vice causes distrust and demoralizes them. Moreover, dishonest employers are not taken seriously by their employees and in most cases, end up being the victims of such illicit practices (Van Wingerden & Van der Stoep, 2018). Humiliating employees equally dehumanizes them and negates their morale. Ripping the shirts of employees by their colleagues is unethical more so for those in direct contact with customers. Employers should be careful to treat their employees as business partners, but not as a means to amass wealth. Several organizations have transformed their human resources practices and actively engage their employees in the decision making processes.
