Article 1: “What makes a leader?” by Daniel Goleman
Question 1
Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the ability of a person to understand his or her emotions well and manage them. Also, EI entails the ability to recognize and influence the emotions of the people. These components include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, empathy, and relationship management. These components need to have leadership ingredients if one is to lead his or her team effectively. Leaders reflect the image of the organization they lead, and for the organization to prosper, the leader needs to be outstanding. Leaders must understand and control their emotions to perform their responsibilities well. When the leader does not manage emotions well, ineffective communication with team members occurs. This affects the organization’s performance negatively (Goleman, 2017).
Question 2
The EI aspect of most significance is self-awareness. When a leader knows his or her strengths and weaknesses well, he or she can understand the emotions of the team members. In order to develop self-awareness, there is a need to learn personal behaviors to understand how others perceive you. To achieve this leader needs to do an individual performance evaluation and compare the comments from the team has about him (Goleman, 2017).
