Instructions: Individual Business Research Memorandum

BReport  - Research Memo Report (Secondary and Primary) Individual Memo Draft

After submitting the Design Brief, your team is charged to research and gather information for the company for the innovation need.   After discussing the research with your team, divide the research equally to each member.   The next assignment reflecting the Group Client Project focuses on each group member submitting an individual research memorandum that reflects his/her personal research. This individual research memorandum will be due by March 15.   Each member is to conduct his/her research and write up his/her findings.

First:  Gather data/information through the library website and other sources, including viewing the Steven Cramer, our business librarian, link.  You are welcome to seek his personal counsel as well.  The sources you choose must be legitimate and credible, not opinion sites, blogsites, Wikipedia or similarly non-reputable sources.

Start early.  This assignment will take you lots of time in gathering, in planning your document, and in writing your document.   You cannot do a good job on a document that you spend two or three hours on.  And, importantly, it’s not okay to let your team down.  We are in this together.  Please fully engage.  Respect your team members by being fair with your contribution.

Memorandum

To: Mr. Don Milholin, Executive Director & President, Co-founder

CC: Ms. Karae Foddrell, Professor

From: Your First/Last Name

Date: Current Date

Subject: Research Compilation on the Out of the Garden Business Need

The opening paragraph should include what you believe the problem is (what you would like to

assist the organization with) and what you would like to address. The information in this

paragraph is to clarify the direction and content of the memo, but only briefly – only enough to

help your audience understand your approach. Your introduction is NOT to be the largest

paragraph.

If you want to elaborate on the current situation in the remaining paragraphs, consider

discussion on information such as, what you see as critical aspects of the business,

opportunities and threats (such as trends, competitors, regulations, markets/customers,

industries, and technologies). Please note: each team member will not have the same

information in the introduction paragraph or this paragraph as each researcher took a different

area to research. Remember, this is an individual assignment, so every group member should

have a one area or a few areas to address in this memorandum. To add, think about your

audience; don’t tell them about themselves. In this research memorandum you should provide

the audience with information they do not know.

Key Findings:

Discuss your findings, the potential implications for the company, for the

innovation, and for the executive team. As you write your material, try think like your

audience. What would you like to know? How would you like to be informed? Include APA in-

text citing and refer to the items in the Appendix.

Subject: Research Compilation on the Out of the Garden Business Need
Out of the Garden Project (OOTGP) currently faces a bigger issue that is affecting its operations. This problem arises from the inability of the company to handle perishable foods efficiently to avoid damage. The company is incurring losses due to the large volume of foods that usually go into waste due to the lack of appropriate handling. As much as the company wants to achieve food security, there is a need to develop appropriate mechanisms to ensure that the food received by the company does not go into waste. This involves coming up with innovative ways on how the company can handle the surplus food and achieve zero food waste.
It is also important to note that the problem of food wastage does not only affect OOTGP. According to statistics, in the US, approximately 60 million metrics tons of food are wasted each year and approximately 40 million metric tons are usually discarded at the landfills. According to the Food Waste Research Alliance website, approximately 25-40% of the food grown, processed and transported to the US will never be consumed (See appendix). This information reveals that indeed the problem of food wastage is bigger than we thought. Some of these waste foods in the landfills release harmful gases that end up contributing to the problem of global warming (Food Waste Reduction Alliance). This is a global problem that needs innovative and strategic ways of resolving it. Also, some of the strategies explained in this memo can be adopted and utilized by other firms as a way of reducing food wastage.
Technological changes are spreading across the world at a faster rate. There is a need for large organizations like OOTGP to evaluate how they can utilize these technologies to resolve some of the issues they are facing. A combination of technology and other strategies will play a major role in resolving the problem. The utilization of solar technology in the cooling, distribution, processing, and packaging of foods is important CITATION Tie14 \l 1033 (Tielens & Candel, 2014). One of the companies that have utilized this technology is Mueller, a company that develops solar-powered milk cooling systems (See appendix). These systems play a major role in the prevention of milk wastage and contribution to food security. Besides, they are also solar-powered meaning that the company utilizes green energy to achieve the objective of zero-food wastage. OOTGP can focus on developing such technologies especially the ones focused on utilizing green energy. The company will be able to avoid the wastage of several milk packets that they receive each day from the donors. It will also ensure that each of the families can receive fresh and healthy food on time. If the company receives surplus milk, it can be stored in these milk cooling systems for as long as the company wishes. Biotechnology solutions can also be used by the company to avoid food wastage. One of the companies utilizing biotechnology to avoid food wastage is Apeel Sciences. The company achieves this by waxing or covering the...
