Importance of Information Systems to Businesses
An information system (IS) is defined as a collection of both human and technical resources that helps in storage, computing, dissemination, and communication of any information that is needed in an organization. Information systems play critical roles in all departments of an organization or enterprise. Roles played by information systems in businesses include:
* Operational excellence: Information systems are critical in the improvement of business efficiency and operation ability in order to achieve higher profit levels. Moreover, they are great contributors to businesses in terms of human resource efficiency and productivity. A classic example of business efficiency and productivity is Wal-Mart's RetailLink system; this system links the Wal-Mart's suppliers to its departmental stores in order to enhance stocks replenishment and resource productivity.
* New business models, products, and services: Information systems are critical in establishing new business models. Usually, business models define how an organization produces, sells, and delivers its products or services in order to generate profits. Information systems are crucial in enhancing the whole business model chain. The production, marketing, and delivery chains of every organization must have information systems incorporated in them so that maximum business efficiency and productivity is realized. Additionally, information systems are impressive in the creation of new products and services. Mostly, new products and services are created through efficiency and productivity; these two attributes are mainly brought into an organization by information systems. For example, Google's Android operating system and Netflix have been as a result of increased efficiency and productivity brought about by information systems.
* Customer and supplier intimacy: Information systems are beneficial to businesses in the hospitality sector. Normally, these businesses require excellent refining to customer service and supplier departments. Providing excellent customer service as well as supplier intimacy plays a great role in achieving higher business revenues and profitability. For example, high-end hotels using information systems can effectively track their customers' preferences and establish customized environments and monitoring systems. Supplier intimacy is relevant and important in the provision of vital inputs, helping to lower expenditures in an organization.
Telecommunication Operations
Telecommunications or telecommunication is defined as exchange of information that takes place over significant distances. This exchange of information usually takes place by electronic means or channels. A simple telecommunication circuit is said to be completed when two stations, each with a transmitter and a receiver are available. In telecommunications, there are several channels that are used in signal transmission from one station to another.
