Do you think group work is useful or might people be better off just working alone?
I think group work is an efficient method of working and learning due to various reasons. First, group work enables individuals to learn to be productive, as each has to fulfill their responsibilities, contribute to the interaction and provide support for each other. Secondly, working in groups enables people to share knowledge and ideas, thereby facilitating the solving of difficult situations that otherwise would be difficult for an individual. It also improves relations among individuals as they get to work with different people of different opinions, culture and even those they do not like.
Are there any benefits to group brainstorming that are not captured by measuring the sheer number of ideas?
Brainstorming encourages critical thinking. For people to solve a problem, they have to think critically, and brainstorming facilitates this by eliciting the development of ideas by a group of individuals until they become logic and precise, while eliminating personal biases.
